Coffee Workshops at Little Perth

On the last Thursday of every month we run our ‘Barista Basics & Latte Art’ Workshop at our Southbourne coffee shop here in Bournemouth. It’s always such a fun evening as we go deep into the coffee journey from farm to cup, taste a bunch of coffees, learn to brew espresso, and try our hand at pouring latte art! We get a lot of messages about what to expect, so here’s a little FAQ for ya. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have further questions though…

La Marzocco PB ABR at Little Perth, Bournemouth

What does the evening look like?

First up we’ll chat coffee. This is your opportunity to nerd-out on coffee knowledge as we unpack the whole story of a coffee bean from origin to your kitchen counter and every step in-between. We’ll taste some coffees too and give you a broad understanding of what speciality coffee is and why sustainability is so key in the coffee industry right now. After this we’ll get behind the coffee machine and learn how to brew espresso, practicing some coffee extraction theory as we go. Finally (and this is where it gets messy), we’ll learn the basics of pouring latte art. By the end of the evening you’ll have not only a thorough understanding of speciality coffee, but you’ll be able to make delicious, well-balanced lattes with super silky milk!

Do I need previous coffee experience?

Absolutely not! These evenings are for anyone with an interest in coffee who likes the idea of getting behind a coffee machine and having some fun. Even if you’re not a massive coffee fan we’re pretty sure you’ll have the best time! (And we may just convert you along the way…!)

What equipment will I be using?

We brew on a La Marzocco Linea PB ABR, using a Mahlkonig E65s grinder. They’re super easy to use and are just about the best of the best.

Will the workshop help me use my home coffee machine?

Yes indeedy. We always put on 3 or 4 workshops at the start of every year for the Christmas coffee machine recipients who need a little helping hand! All the theory and techniques you learn on the night will directly apply to any home or office espresso machine, so you’ll be all set and ready to make better coffee whether you’ve got a top-of-the-range machine or a cheap one from a charity shop!

Will it help me get a job in coffee?

We often have people come along who want to work in coffee but don’t have any experience on their CV. Just last week we had one such fella message us saying he’d just picked up work in Australia on his gap yah off the back of a recent workshop. Although we can’t offer you a qualification or a reference, you’ll be able to say you’ve carried out basic barista training and know your way around an espresso machine. If you’re in this boat, stick around for a chat afterwards - we’ll be able to point you in the direction of some great resources, and may even know of a job or two going on the local scene!

Will we be drinking lots of coffee?

This one’s up to you! We’ll be tasting a few coffees in very small quantities but there’s no need to drink more than a few sips. Don’t worry - you wont have the 3am caffeine jitters!

How much does it cost?

Our workshops are currently priced at £50. For this you’ll get an evening’s tuition from one of our team, all coffee/milk included, tons of knowledge, and we’ll throw in a bag of North Star coffee to take home too (worth £12-14).

Do you run corporate coffee training events or team bonding events?

We do - and we can’t recommend them highly enough! If the usual team-bonding events aren’t your thing, or you fancy doing something a little different for your next work social then definitely drop us an email to see what we can do. We’ve hosted some super fun corporate events over the years, and feedback has been that they’ve not only brought the office together but vastly improved the standards of the morning brew too!

Do you offer coffee training for other businesses?

This is becoming a growing part of our business and one we are absolutely loving! Whether you’re a local coffee shop looking for some full-team training, or one-to-one sessions for a new-hire, we can definitely help. We also price our training at rates affordable for small businesses - we know that there’s not often the budget for pricey training, and we’re just in it for the love of coffee!
